Books

So I read. A lot

I read a lot and every year I tell myself that I'm going to keep track of what I read and try to quantify the amount of text that goes through my head. (I already qualify it since people often ask me to recommend books to them)

So on this page will be a running tally of the books I am reading and have read since January 1st 2012, most recent at the top. I will include a few words on my opinion, but any full blown reviews of something fabulous (or horrible)  will be posted on the main blog.

Currently Reading:

City of Glass, Cassandra Clare: YA Paranormal

Have finished:

MAY

City of Ashes, Cassandra Clare: YA Paranormal: A good sequel.
A Game of Thrones, George RR Martin: Fantasy: Am also watching the TV series.
Insurgent, Veronica Roth: YA Dystopian: Still liking this series, but book 1 was better.
Bitterblue, Kristen Cashore: YA Fantasy: Loved it. Even better than Graceling.
The Last Four Things, Paul Hoffman: Fantasy: Hmm. OK maybe. We'll see after Book 3.
Inda, Sherwood Smith: Fantasy. Where can I get the rest of this series?

APRIL

Embassytown, Chine Mieville; New Weird: Loved it! Loved it!
Death Comes to Pemberly,  PD James; Historical Crime: Really liked it.
A College of Magics, Caroline Stevermyer: Fantasy: Glad I gave this one a chance.
Love and Romanpunk, Tansy Rayner Roberts: Short Stories: Loved it.
The Left Hand of God, Paul Hoffman; Fantasy: Pretty good. Not great, but enjoyable.
FeverLauren DeStefano; YA Dystopian: Middle of the trilogy. Meh.
Ready Player One, Ernest Cline: Science Fiction
The Name of the Star, Maureen Johnson; YA Paranormal: Jack the Ripper. V. Good.
John Dies at the End, David Wong; New Weird: Sigh.
Slide, Jill Hathaway; YA Crime: Enjoyable.
The Reposession, Sam Hawksmoor; YA: Set outside Hope BC. Only reason I kept reading.
The Killables, Gemma Malley; YA Dystopian: YA Dystopia is getting predictable.

MARCH

Star Island, Carl Hiaasen; Crime: A bit draggy in the middle. Would make a good film.
Kraken, China Mieville; New Weird: Probably my 3rd favourite Mieville.
Hogfather, Terry Pratchett; Fantasy: I just like Discworld all right.
The Truth, Terry Pratchett; Fantasy: Old standby.
The Snow, Adam Roberts; Science Fiction: Not for me.
Fatherland, Robert Harris; Crime/Alternate History: Why did I put off reading this? Excellent.
Battle Royale, Koushun Takami; Dystopian: Yes, it's like The Hunger Games. But really it isn't.
Heaven, Christopher Marzi; YA Magical Realism: Unique. I liked it.
Wither, Lauren DeStefano; YA Dystopian: Teen brides are kinda creepy, but the story is good.
Fated, Benedict Jacka; Crime/Fantasy: Read Rivers of London instead.
The Dark Volume, G.W. Dahlquist; Steampunk: Sequel that sort of falls apart halfway through.
The Maze Runner, James Dashner; YA Dystopian: A male protagonist for once!
The Scorch Trials, James Dashner; YA Dystopian: Not as good as Maze Runner.

FEBRUARY

Thief of Time, Terry Pratchett; Fantasy. I want to be Susan Sto Helit when I grow up.
Finch, Jeff VanderMeer; New Weird. I am never eating mushrooms again.
Siren, Tricia Rayburn: YA Paranormal. Meh. It was okay.
Night Watch, Terry Pratchett: Fantasy. Still my all time favourite Vimes book.
Blackout, Connie Willis: Time Travel. Have added the sequel to my Waterstone's wishlist.
Thud!, Terry Pratchett: Fantasy. Makes me want to re-read Night Watch as well.

JANUARY

Tancredi, James Palumbo: Sci Fi satire. Um....yes I like Gulliver's Travels too James.
Snuff, Terry Pratchett: Fantasy. I'm not sure. I'll review it fully, maybe.
The Scorpio RacesMaggie Stiefvater: YA Fantasy. I really liked this.
Between, Jessica Warman: YA Mystery. I will be reviewing this on the blog in February.
The Looking Glass Wars, Frank Beddor: YA Fantasy. Mostly tell instead of show.
Dark Parties, Sarah Grant: YA Dystopian. I agree with FYA about this one.
Shatter Me, Tahereh Mafi: YA Dystopian. Good, A bit of an abrupt end, but it's 1st of 3 so I'm okay with that.
Inheritance, Christopher Paolini: YA Fantasy. LOOOOONG descriptions of battle. But a good end.
Brisinger,, Christopher Paolini:  YA Fantasy. Enjoyable, but prose is getting a bit purple
Eldest, Christopher Paolini: YA Fantasy. Best of the four I think.
Eragon, Christopher Paolini: YA Fantasy. Good, clearly written by a very young writer, but one with lots of talent
Ruby in the Smoke, Phillip Pullman: YA Mystery. Sally Lockheart, I love you
Shadowheart, Tad Williams: Fantasy. End of series. This book seems to be one big battle sequence
Legend, Marie Lu: YA Dystopian. Enjoyed it. Would recommend.
Fracture, Megan Miranda; YA Paranormal. Excellent hook that the book doesn't really live up to.
The Cold Commands, Richard Morgan: Fantasy. 2nd in series, good continuation. I'll take several more please
Moon Over Soho, Ben Aaronovitch; Paranormal Mystery. I LOVED THIS BOOK
